Opinions on the Electoral College?

I read a book based on the diary kept by James Madison during the Constitutional Convention. There were several methods discussed on how to choose the President including the one chosen but not once was the idea of a direct vote by the people for the President ever discussed. The reason is that they did not fully trust the voters to always make the right decision. That is also why the members of U.S. Senate where originally chosen by the state legislatures.
