My computer wont stay in standby, sleep, or hibernation.?

I try to conserve electricity by placing my computer in one of its low power states. So it should stay in low power mode until I activate it. Instead it will automatically start up within a few moments, and so the low power states obviously are not functioning the way I want them to. My computer in an HP Media center, is there some way to get these functions to work properly?
